Slovakia is a member of the EU and NATO. Its Prime Minister, Robert Fico, was shot yesterday morning US time by a 71-year-old man. Fico was in critical condition when he arrived at the hospital. He did survive the surgery and was listed in stable condition at last report.
Fico has been an out-spoken critic of admitting Ukraine to membership in the EU, NATO, and military aid to Ukraine. He also opposed liberal immigration policies. He is considered a “nationalist” because he professed Slovakia’s citizens should be taken care of by their government before outsiders (Slovakia First!). Some have labeled him pro-Russian, which may not be true as his position could be that he does not want to aggravate the Russian Bear. He has also been called a leftist.
The USA and EU told Putin years ago that Ukraine would never be allowed to join NATO nor the European Union. Now, there is a serious effort being made to admit Ukraine into both organizations. Fico has been a constant thorn in the side of the liberal EU management who wanted to give “everything” to Ukraine and open the borders.
Slovakia borders Poland to the north and Ukraine to the east. Given the world-wide tensions, who shot Fico, why did he shoot Fico, who assisted the shooter, and who paid him, if anyone, will be of great interest and potential disaster. One of the suspects already named is the CIA.
