Tidbits, Q&A: Interest Rate, Dockers' Strike, PMI 11/3/24

Highlights

Wayne Bacon of Hammersmith Reports has been involved in the international grain trade for more than 60 years. His comment this week on corn:

"Corn had a good week for export with large sales to Mexico and a new shipment loading to Tunisia in NOLA. I have not seen US corn sold to Tunisia in quite a while. The US Grains Council office in Tunis says that more US corn business is expected for Tunisia."

Tunisia is in North Africa, a hop, skip, and a jump from the Black Sea. If Ukraine, Romania, or Russia had any corn at a reasonable price, Tunisia would not be buying U.S. corn out of New Orleans.

The International Longshore and Warehouse Union Ship & Dock Foremen Local 514 provided 72-hour advanced notice of a strike for tomorrow at 8 AM, setting up disruption at Canada’s biggest and third-biggest ports.

The BC Maritime Employers Association (BCMEA) said it intends to “defensively” lock out ILWU Local 514’s more than 700 members on Monday, which would shut down all cargo operations for its many member companies in British Columbia.
