The Panama Canal uses fresh water from Gatun Lake to fill the locks to raise the ships. The water level of Gatun Lake is right where it normally is this time of year, just shy of 88 feet. A year ago, it was just shy of 80 feet and traffic through the canal was restricted.
The United Nations reported world food prices rose in October to an 18-month high as vegetable oils led to price increases of most food staples.
The 29th Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, in Baku, Azerbaijan starts today and runs until 22 November. This 29th meeting is called COP29 and brings together leaders from governments, businesses, and civil organizations to advance solutions to the “defining issue of our time.” That would be carbon emissions in their mind.
A key focus of COP29 will be on finance, as trillions of dollars have been promised more than 10 years ago to be transferred from developed countries to undeveloped countries to drastically reduce greenhouse gas emissions and “protect lives and livelihoods from the worsening impacts of climate change.” The money was scheduled to begin exchanging from the developed countries to the undeveloped countries two years ago, but it never happened.
